A Glimpse into History
Rosarito’s history dates back thousands of years, with evidence of Paleo-Indians in the region as early as 2,000 BC. By 1,000 BC, the Yuman ancestors of the Kumeyaay people inhabited the northern part of the Baja California Peninsula, including the area now known as Rosarito, which they called Wa-cuatay, meaning “big houses” in their language.
The Spanish era began with the arrival of conquistador Hernán Cortés, who sent expeditions to explore what he believed to be the Island of California. In 1533, Fortún Ximénez became the first European to land in Baja California, and in 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo passed through Rosarito on his way to San Diego Bay.
